Students Learn, Play during Summer SACC Program

July 12, 2021 - The cafeteria at Indian Springs Elementary was transformed into a chemistry lab one hot summer day when a guest scientist stopped by to demonstrate a few chemical reactions to students at Comal ISD’s summer child-care program.

Scientist Jessica Wigley from Mad Science taught the 5 to 11-year-old students about physical vs. chemical change, low pressure vs. high pressure, and for the finale she showcased bubbles and fog demonstrating a chemical reaction.

This Mad Science presentation is just one of the many opportunities that students in the district’s summer child-care program enjoy. On any given day this summer, they may learn chemistry, visit the zoo, go bowling and swim while their parents are busy at work.

The district’s Community Education’s School Age Child Care (SACC) summer program offers families the perfect solution to beat the summer doldrums and help parents too.

Open to all children from ages 5 to 11 or kindergarten through sixth grades, SACC’s summer program offers recreational and educational activities including group games, guest presentations, indoor and outdoor playtime and healthy snacks in a safe environment.

The summer SACC program is available 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday, Aug. 13, at seven elementary campuses. The campuses include Freheit Elementary, Garden Ridge Elementary, Hoffmann Lane Elementary, Indian Springs Elementary, Johnson Ranch Elementary, Kinder Ranch Elementary and Timberwood Park Elementary.

There is still time to enroll in the fun this summer. Transportation to field trips is provided by the Comal ISD transportation department. Learn more about the summer 2021 registration here and visit the SACC EZChildTrack Parent Portal to enroll.
