As parents and children gear up for the new school year, school nurses with the Comal Independent School District want to remind them of a few health tips and State guidelines which can ensure that the year goes smoothly. In order to kick-off the year on a healthy note, the district has compiled a quick guide to the nurse’s office.
A few of the key tips and reminders from the nurse’s office include completing an annual renewal of medication authorization, knowing immunization requirements and exemptions, following the fever rule, submitting a physician’s note and specifying student allergies.
The most important reminder, however, is to keep the school nurse informed of any health-related issues a student may have, whether it is a food allergy, medication or temporary illness.
“Our campus nurses need to know about every student’s medical needs and conditions,” says Courtney Nesloney, R.N., health services coordinator for Comal ISD. “While it is important to let the classroom teachers know, it is also important to have a conversation with the campus nurse.”
Every Comal ISD campus is staffed with a registered nurse who plays a pivotal role in bridging healthcare and education. Each school nurse works closely with school staff and parents to address the physical, mental, emotional and social health needs of every student.
