Smithson Valley Rangers Football Honored For Record Season

January 26, 2024 - The Smithson Valley High School football team was recognized for its second-place finish in this year’s State 5A Division 1 conference with a 14-2 record, 7-0 in district play. Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Larry Hill was recognized as well for earning his 300th Career Win during the season on September 15.

This was the Rangers first time since 2004 to play in a state title game and the fourth time in its history. The 2023 team won 14 straight games after its loss to Reagan during season’s opening game. Winning the District 12-5A, Division I title and defeating Georgetown, Magnolia West, College Station, A&M Consolidated and Brownsville Vets to advance to the state championship.

Team captains, Jackson Duffey, Zach Gingrich, Jaxson Maynard and Ryland Walker, represented the team at the board meeting on Thursday along with Coach Hill.

Hill, who has been an educator and coach for 41 years, earned his 300th Career Win on September 15 in a game against Wagner. He has spent the last 31 years at SVHS. 

A few of his many accolades over the years includes being named Coach of the Decade for 2000-2009 and Coach of the Year on many occasions by the San Antonio Express News. A 41-year member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, Hill received the Tom Landry Award in 2015 and was inducted into the association's Hall of Honor in 2016. He is a four-time finalist for the prestigious Power of Influence Award as well, an award given annually to the nation’s top high school football coach for on the field success and community service.
